A shockingly immersive, self-guided museum in Chicago dedicated to the brutal history of medieval torture. Grisly, graphic, and way more educational than you’d expect.
More Brutal (and Educational) Than Expected
This place absolutely exceeded my expectations. I thought it might be kind of gimmicky, but the reviews were solid, the photos looked promising, and I was curious enough to check it out. I’m really glad I did.
It’s room after room of medieval torture history, each space filled with grim replicas and detailed displays of different methods used across Europe. Some I had heard of. Most… I had not. Let’s just say things got creative back then, and not in a good way.
There are signs with short summaries throughout, but I highly recommend using your phone for the audio tour. It adds a surprising amount of context and detail and makes the experience feel even more immersive. I thought I had a decent grasp of medieval torture (as much as one does), but the sheer volume and brutality of the methods left me kind of shocked.
Also, surprisingly interactive. I won’t spoil anything, but you can touch more than you’d expect, and it really adds to the whole “what if you were here” horror of it all.
